Knowledge Saves the Heart from Ignorance

Knowledge is the spirit that saves the heart from the death of ignorance;
it is the light that saves it from the darkness of iniquity.
The hearts of the iniquitous are dead because they are oblivious to God, and the hearts of the heedless are sick because they ignore His commandments.

-Abu Ali Thaqafi, "The Kashf al-Mahjub"

  1. hi
    dear lecturer
    u believe that Knowledge is like spirit & faith is like light 4 person.
    but my opinion is exactly vice versa because we read in quran "va nafakhto fihe men rouhi"
    therefor i think, faith is more important than knowledge.

  2. Waalaikumsalam,
    The quote says nothing about faith, actually, so I'm not sure what you mean. It says,
    "Knowledge is the spirit that saves the heart from the death of ignorance;
    it is the light that saves it from the darkness of iniquity.
    The hearts of the iniquitous are dead because they are oblivious to God, and the hearts of the heedless are sick because they ignore His commandments."

    Actually, I think the author is referring to the importance of knowledge in keeping the heart healthy. Through knowledge, we can 1) obtain awareness of God and 2) we can know his commands, which save us from both obliviousness of Allah (forgetfulness - the opposite of remembrance) and heedlessness, which is the cause of our overstepping the bounds of God's commands. In sum, I believe the two refer to taqwa. Thus, knowledge is a prerequisite for taqwa.

    Of course, as you aply quoted from the Qur'an, I agree that faith is a prerequisite to this, for knowledge without true faith will never have any positive impact on the heart. Thank you for your comment.... Wassalam
